Considered a leading figure in the modern generation of Dutch artists, Karel Appel (1921-2006) created expressionist paintings that were at the same time widely abstract yet deeply spiritual, representational, and figurative. After studying at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Appel founded, along with Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret, the avant-garde movement COBRA in 1948. Under the principle of freedom in both form and color, COBRA artists expressed vivid colors and a raw energy that spoke of renewal after the end of WW II. Appel’s work has been featured in many international exhibitions, including recent shows at Institut Valencià d'Art Modern, Valencia, Spain (2010); Galerie Lelong, Paris, France (2009); Galerie Ulysses, Vienna, Austria (2008-09); and the Cobra Museum, Amstelveen, The Netherlands (2008).
