Lot description
Casually violent, Walker’s vignettes depict dark behaviors as they examine various sorts of power struggles within the format of a classical, black and white frieze. This provocative ink on paper work exemplifies the artist's commitment to darkly witty, controversial explorations of identity and power.

Kara Walker (b. 1969) delineates American history and attitudes about gender, race and sexuality with singular dispassion. Known for her signature cut-paper silhouette installations and light projection puppet-show videos, Walker explores American history and attitudes concerning identity, gender, race and sexuality with a definite aloofness, playing historical realism against scenes of romantic fantasy. With colored spotlights illuminating her silhouetted figures, Walker’s powerful installations work to implicate audiences as they bear witness to scenes of cut-paper characters inflicting heinous acts of violence upon one another. A 1997 MacArthur Grant Recipient, Walker was also the 2002 United States representative for the São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil.
