Lot description
Renowned Spanish Contemporary Artist Juan Genovés (b.1930) became one of Spain’s most influential artists with his politically driven paintings representing the repressive Franco regime of the 1960s. Derived from media images, Genovés’ works reduce real scenes of terror and violence to flat compositions, void of context, which focus on either individual people or the crowd through dramatic perspectives. In ‘La cava – The hunt’ from 1967, Genovés reproduces a police chase in two panels showing fractions of the unidentified subjects through a police spotlight, before and after the hunt. The anonymity of both space and subject emphasizes feelings of anxiety, fear, and loneliness, which have made Genovés’ paintings universal images of political suppression and brutality.

This work is in excellent condition and comes in a wooden frame that measures approximately 2 cm on each side.
