Lot description
Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat", emerging Chinese Contemporary female artist Ju Duoqi's "Vegetable Museum no. 16: Van Gogh made of Leek" (2008) recasts Van Gogh's masterpiece in a symbolic and subversive manner, replacing paint with vegetables. Ju began her iconic "Vegetable Museum" Series in 2006, as self-portraits of herself in the presence of her figurative sculptures in the round. By 2008, Ju was painstakingly recreating the world's most historic paintings with vegetables and fruits, and assigning humorous, self-effacing titles. In this process, she adds her own personal voice to these photographic works while questioning the meaning of Western art history. This photograph is unframed, an in excellent condition. This photograph comes to the sale directly from the Studio of the Artist, China.

Ju Duoqi was born in 1973 in Chongqing, China and graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts College in 1996. She was chosen for the "Beijing BS1 Contemporary Museum 2007 Nomination Exhibition" in Shanghai at the Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Beijing Art Museum of Imperial City, and has shown in exhibitions at the Zhu Qizhan Art Museum in Shanghai, and the Contemporary Art Museum of Asia in Beijing as well as her 2008 solo and group exhibitions at the elite Galerie Paris-Beijing.
