Lot description
German artist Joseph Beuys, born in 1921, was a social philosopher and political activist who believed human creativity was the only catalyst for revolutionary change. Known for his sculpture, installations, graphic art, and performance art, Beuys had a voice that sought to be heard in many different ways and by many audiences. His work focused on concepts of humanism and social philosophy, characterizing his career with passionate public debate and controversy. Now, Beuys is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His experimental work with artist Nam June Paik and the Fluxus group blurred the boundaries between literature, music, visual art, performance and everyday life. Beuys evolved these ideas into his own performances which he called “actions,” explaining that these “acts” of expression could ultimately play a wider role in society. In addition to his “actions,” Beuys began to publicly exhibit large-scale sculptures, drawings, room installations and editioned objects. Beuys was motivated by a Utopian belief and sought to use human creativity and the “social sculptures” he created to bring about revolutionary change. Beuys’ artwork is included in museum collections all over the world including Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Tate in London. In January of 2009, a retrospective of Beuy’s film was held at Hamburger Bahnhof Museum of Contemporary Art in Berlin, Germany.
