Lot description

Josef Sudek, Belvedere Garden, Prague, c. 1950s. Vintage gelatin silver print, paper size is 11.75 x 3.75 inches (29.8 x 9.5 cm). Stamped and inscribed.

Very good condition, just some very light edge wear as to be expected.

Czech photographer Josef Sudek's legacy continues to be important to the modern history of photography. Sudek, born in 1896, was trained as a book-binder but was forced to find another profession when his arm was amputated during World War I. He became a professional photographer and in 1922 began studying at the State School of Graphic Art in Prague. Sudek was the first to receive the distinction "Artist of Merit" from the Czech government. Sudek's photographs are marked by a poetic and emotive atmosphere while the model still maintains its identity. Sudek died in 1976.
