Lot description
John Steuart Curry painted "Rainbow after Storm" around the time that the acclaimed Regionalist painter was named an artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1936. Curry painted the powerful storms and other weather phenomena that rolled across the expansive rolling farmlands of the Midwest. Here the appearance of the rainbow and the calm pastoral scene in the foreground suggest that the immediate danger has passed but the clouds and lightning bolts compete for the viewer's attention as the disturbance continues to roll back through the distant landscape. This work is related to several similar Curry landscapes of the period, "Wisconsin Farm" 1937-39, "The Cloud" 1930, and "View of Madison with Rainbow" 1937 and has been authenticated by Vivan Kiechel of Kiechel Fine Art, Lincoln, NE who works with the Curry Estate.
