Lot description
Executed in 2003, this work by American painter John Sonsini belongs to the artist's ongoing series of works depicting day laborers of Hispanic heritage. Sonsini pays workers their typical hourly wage to sit for his portraits, bringing a class dynamic into the creative process; however, the works are not overtly politicized. In "Jose Gomez," the subject is portrayed with the neutral expression and shoulders-up framing of a passport photograph (a possible reference the controversial immigration issues under debate in America), while a subdued palette and detailed brushwork bring the eponymous Gomez's humanity to the fore. The canvas is signed by both the artist and the sitter on verso, and measures 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm).
