Lot description
Paper size is 24 x 21 inches (61 x 53.3 cm).

John Dugdale (b. 1960) has achieved an international reputation as an artist who produces wonderfully intimate photographs. In the early 90s, he suffered a series of strokes, as well as an AIDS-related illness called CMV retinitis, the combined effects of which took away most of his sight. Now totally blind in one eye and with less than 20 percent of his vision in the other, he looks upon the loss of his sight as a sort of gift. He has spent the past 15 years dedicated to his artistic vision, which is indelibly attached to the slower pace and craft-intensive processes of the 19th Century, rather than the commercial work he did at the start of his career for renowned clients such as Bergdorf Goodman and Ralph Lauren.

Now known for his luxurious cyanotypes, his large-format, gently lit albumen prints, and his velvety Van Dyke prints, Dugdale has turned adversity into an opportunity for fierce independence. While in recent years he has depended on assistants to help focus his large-bellowed view camera, he is working to devise a system of premeasured cords and cables that could allow him to work alone in the studio, a lovingly restored Stone Ridge farmhouse, which itself feels like a portal to the 19th Century.

A selection of Dugdale’s work was featured in “The Camera Always Lies,” the Center for Photography at Woodstock’s second Regional Photographic Triennial, in 2008. Dugdale's photographs, widely exhibited and collected, have also appeared in four books: Lengthening Shadows Before Nightfall, The Clandestine Mind, Life's Evening Hour and New Suns Will Arise.
