This rare drawing is part of Chamberlain's "Gondola" series (1981-1985), a little known part of his prolific career. Colorful and expressionistic, this piece captures the essence of the artist's iconic sculptural work.

American sculptor John Chamberlain (1927-2011) is well known for his use of festive color and found materials. His work is rooted in the formal tensions of Abstract Expressionism and of the Fluxus movement. Chamberlain’s works have been featured in the São Paulo Art Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. He had his first retrospective in 1971 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and another retrospective was held by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1986. Most recently, his work was the subject of a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY.
