Lot description
In 1977, Chamberlain began experimenting with photography, using a Panoramic Wide-lux camera lens. In many ways his photographs mimic the pulled, manipulated metal in his large sculptures. "Untitled, Flavin" is not only a beautiful example of Chamberlain's exploration of photography, but it also serves as a magnificent homage to his friend, Minimalist artist Dan Flavin. Elegant in composition and tone, Chamberlain's photograph reveals an equally sharp eye for the minimal as well as the expressionistic.

American sculptor John Chamberlain (1927-2011) is well known for his use of festive color and found materials. His work is rooted in the tension of the Abstract Expressionists, and exhibits the flow and noisiness of Fluxus. Chamberlain’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the São Paulo Art Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Whitney Biennial. He had his first retrospective in 1971 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and another retrospective was held by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1986. Most recently, Chamberlain's legacy was honored with an impressive and revered retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York, from February through May of 2012.
