John Baldessari (b. 1931, National City, CA) is a contemporary American artist who creates conceptual compositions, imbued with an absurdist sense of humor, that explore the relationship between language and image. Baldessari appropriates his imagery from a variety of sources, including advertising and film, and transforms them into works that are ironic investigations into perception, meaning, and interpretation. Often, he applies a painterly element to remind the viewer that the hand of the artist lies not only in the ordering of the images, but in the act of hybridizing the photographic process. From his photo-text canvases and obscuring of faces to his composite photo collages and installations, Baldessari has significantly contributed to the definition and evolution of postmodern art. The artist has won various awards over the course of his career, including the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award from the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Americans for the Arts in 2005, among numerous others.
