THE JOURNAL OF JOEL-PETER WITKIN – DELUXE AND CLASSIC EDITIONS

This unique book set, published by world-renowned 21ST Editions in 2008, re-creates Witkin’s personal journal page-for-page, illuminating the eye and mind of one of the most daring and intriguing photographic artists of the past 50 years. Offered here is a set of both the DELUXE EDITION of the Journal (which includes a bound portfolio of 15 large signed platinum prints) and the CLASSIC EDITION of the Journal (which includes 3 bound platinum prints, 2 of which are NOT included in the Deluxe Edition).

DELUXE EDITION: Edition of 40 numbered and 7 lettered (A-G) copies worldwide, the Deluxe Edition of The Journal of Joel-Peter Witkin is comprised of 2 matching books hand-bound in crushed silk. A large embossed portfolio case houses both books, and contains an additional mounted signed platinum print entitled "A Corner of My Room." Edition letter G.

BOOK 1 - Signed hand-bound facsimile reproduction of Joel-Peter Witkin’s personal journal. 10x10”.

BOOK 2 - A large hand-bound portfolio of 15 signed original platinum prints of recent work, with texts printed in letterpress. Image sizes roughly 10x12” on 13x16” pages.

CLASSIC EDITION: Edition of 135 copies worldwide. The Classic Edition of The Journal of Joel-Peter Witkin is comprised of a single hand-bound, signed and numbered book housed in a custom portfolio case.

SIGNED PLATINUM PRINT OF "RETABLO, NEW MEXICO" (2007)
& HUMAN SKELETON USED IN CREATING "RETABLO, NEW MEXICO"

The Classic Edition of The Journal of Joel-Peter Witkin includes a platinum print of "Retablo, New Mexico." In the lower left quadrant of this image is a human skeleton Witkin had borrowed from Lance Speer, a senior member of the 21ST Editions staff at the time. After altering this skeleton and photographing the finished composition, Witkin returned the skeleton to Speer, still in its altered state and with the original props intact. This is a unique artifact.

Included with this set is the original skeleton used for the "Retablo, New Mexico" image. It is accompanied by a freestanding hand coated platinum print of the "Retablo" image (image size 10x12” / frame size 14x18") inscribed “for Lance” in pencil in Witkin’s hand, and with Witkin’s original signature (this inscription can be matted out). This "Retablo" signed image was NOT published as a large platinum print as offered here (10x12”), ONLY as a smaller (6x8”) bound platinum print as found in the Classic Edition of the Journal. To Lance Speer’s knowledge this is a UNIQUE print.

CLASSIC RESERVE EDITION OF SONGS OF INNOCENCE & EXPERIENCE (INCLUDES SIGNED PLATINUM PRINT OF "EVE KNIGHTING DAGUERRE")

In 2004 21ST Editions published a Classic Edition of the Songs of Innocence & Experience by William Blake, with 60+ stunning Witkin images. The book is in a 10-color offset process on Arches paper in an edition of only 915 copies.

21ST Editions also offered a “Classic Reserve Edition” of this book, which included a signed platinum print of "Eve Knighting Daguerre" (11 x 12” image on 16 x 20” paper) in an edition of only 75 numbered cop

Provenance:
All the books and freestanding prints listed in this offering have been in the possession of Lance Speer, a senior member of the 21ST Editions staff at the time, since their creation. They have never been shown or displayed. They include their original delivery cases, and are supplemented with the original advertising ephemera that was created by 21ST Editions to announce the availability of each book. The skeleton accompanying this set resided in the studio of Joel-Peter Witkin until its return to Mr. Speer in 2009. An excellent set from the personal collection of one of 21ST Editions’ contributing editors. Truly an “insider’s” package opportunity.
