Lot description
Joaquín Torres-García (1874-1949) was a Uruguayan artist best known for introducing the Constructivist art movement to South America through what he called Constructive Universalism. Torres-García studied academic painting at the Escuela Oficial de Bellas Artes de Barcelona and at the Academia Baixas. His time in Europe exposed Torres-García to the emerging painting styles of the avant garde, and he began experimenting, in his own way, with Impressionism and neo-Impressionism. When he moved to Paris in 1926, he met Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, and the three artists, along with Michel Seuphor, formed the group Cercle at Carre. It was during this time when Torres-García was surrounded by other artistic revolutionaries, that he began developing his own signature style, Constructive Universalism, in which he combined elements of Cubism, Surrealism, pre-Colombian art, along with numerous other movements and styles, and utilized a wide variety of traditional symbols in paintings and flat and three-dimensional sculpture. In 1943, Torres-García published his landmark book in which he expanded upon his artistic theories, entitled “Universalismo Constructivo.”

Torres-García’s works have been included in worldwide exhibitions at institutions such as the Museo de Arte Moderno, Madrid; the Musee d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Hayward Gallery, London.
