Born in 1976 in the Zhejiang Province in China, Jin Shan now lives and works in Hangzhou, using different media to reflect the daily life of young people in contemporary China. Shan’s installation "It Came from the Sky", now on view at the Spencer Museum of Art in Kansas City, explores the idea of political control with its silicone rendering of a policeman suspended by wires and surrounded by projected cosmic images from the Hubble Space Telescope. His 2009 piece, Globe, demonstrates his dreams of restoring a planet without national boundaries in its presentation of a globe with only earth and water that spins silently, reminding the viewer of the earth in its original state. As one of the most promising young artists in China, he has exhibited internationally and at many premiere art fairs.

His solo exhibitions include: “A Living Dog is Better Than a Dead Lion,” Platform China, Beijing (2011); “One Man’s Island,” Frieze Art Fair, London, UK (2010); “One Man’s Island,” Platform China, Beijing (2010); “Naked Ape,” Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing, China (2009); and “Water Division,” Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing, China (2007). Selected group exhibitions include: “THE THIRD PARTY—An exhibition in Three Acts,” Platform China, Beijing (2010); “Jungle-A-Close-Up Focus on Chinese Contemporary Art Trends,” Platform China, Beijing (2010); “Photo Taipei 2009,” Taipei, China; “Blackboard,” Shanghai, China (2009); “Plague of Fantasies,” Shanghai, China (2008); “Refresh Emerging Chinese Artists,” Shanghai/Beijing, China (2007); “Amateur World,” Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing, China; and “Shouting Truth,” Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing, China (2007). He has also exhibited at the 2007 Venice Biennial and the 2006 Singapore Biennial.
