Lot description
The heart is one of the most important symbols in Dine's iconography. As the image of the bathrobe always refer to the artist's image of himself, so the heart refers to his ex-wife Nancy, who was also the muse of many of his early works. This brightly colored woodcut was published by Pace Editions to benefit Film Forum in New York City, and was printed by the late Joe Wilfer, considered by many to be one of the finest contemporary woodcut printers. During Wilfer's tenure at Pace, Dine expanded his print oeuvre with many experimental woodcuts.

A master of printmaking, Jim Dine has long combined Pop-informed imagery with a highly personal point of view. Among other popular subjects such as his iconic hearts and robes, flowers have also been a focus throughout Dine's career. Dine was born June 16, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at night at the Cincinnati Art Academy during his senior year of high school and then attended the University of Cincinnati, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Ohio University, Athens, from which he received his B.F.A. in 1957. Dine moved to New York in 1959 and soon became a pioneer creator of “Happenings”, together with Allan Kaprow, and Robert Whitman. He exhibited at the Judson Gallery, New York, in 1958 and 1959, and his first solo show took place at the Reuben Gallery, New York, in 1960.
