Jerry Stoll, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, c. 1968. Gelatin silver print, image size is 8.63 x 13.75 inches (21.9 x 34.9 cm); sheet size is 10.88 x 14 inches (27.6 x 35.6 cm). Stamped.

Jerry Stoll was a photographer and filmmaker known for his photographic portraits of jazz artists and other musicians. Among his many famous subjects are Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. Stoll was also the official photographer for the Monterey Jazz Festival, and a regular at other music festivals and jazz clubs. In addition to his passion for music, Stoll also had a lifelong interest in politics. He was a brief member of the Communist Party, made several award-winning documentaries, including an anti-Vietnam war film and a film about Daniel Ellsberg and the Black Panthers, and was involved in the civil rights movement. Stoll died at his home in Oakland, California in 2004 at the age of 80.
