Lot description
"Moonlight" (2002) is a tour-de-force, museum-level painting by famed post-modern Indian artist Jehangir Sabavala (Indian, 1922-2011), who was among the first Indian artists to become internationally acclaimed, along with contemporaries M.F. Husain, and F.N. Souza. Known for stunning, abstracted landscapes that conflate principals of spatialism, cubism and French modernism, Sabavala is famous for his unique manner of painting in the Indian Modernist tradition, based on the fracturing and reflecting of light sources and the deconstructing of landscapes, as well as a lush, saturated color palette, which he uses to balances and temper his unabashed breaking down of space. "Moonlight", is a rare night-scape by the artist, painted in specific and harmonious layers of blues and oranges and at a grand scale. This work is one of the most important paintings by the artist to come to international auction, is in excellent condition, measures 30 x 50 inches (73.5 by 122.5 cm), is custom framed and accompanied with a formal certificate of authenticity and all supporting paperwork.

Born in India in 1922, Jehangir Sabavala passed away in 2011. The artist received a diverse education in the arts, attending the prestigious Elphinstone College at the University of Mumbai in 1941, the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai in 1944, The Academie Julian in Paris, France in 1944, The Heatherly School of Art in London in 1947, The Academie Julian and Academie Andrew Lhote in Paris in 1954, and The Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris in 1957. With his extensive training and skill the artist won many awards including the Lalit Kala Ratna Award, The Grand Prix de la Peniture award, Monaco, and the Dadabhai Naoroji Millennium Award from Mumbai, amongst others. Sabavala exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in countless solo and group exhibitions at major galleries and Museums internationally including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai; The Aicon Gallery- New York; The National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi; the Indian Fine Arts Society in Singapore.
