Jeff Koons (b. 1955) is an American artist who has emerged as one of the most controversial art world figures of the past 20 years. Like Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, Koons is concerned with the transformation of everyday objects into art. His work merges high culture and kitsch into banal renditions of balloon animals, dogs, and popular icons. Koons insists that there are no hidden meanings in his art, refusing the framework of critical contemplation in favor of immediate, visceral reactions from the public. Over the course of his career, Koons has received numerous awards including the John Singleton Copley Award (2010), the Wollaston Award from the Royal Academy of London (2008), and the Artistic Achievement Award from Americans for the Arts (2006).
