Jasper Jonhs' use of language to convey color ("red" "yellow" and "blue") in more or less muted, single color prints, is the kind of playful yet thoughtful aesthetic that makes him one of the most significant artists in the Contemporary canon.

Jasper Johns (b. May 15, 1930) is an American painter and printmaker. His work is often described as Neo-Dadaist, though he is often considered within the Pop Art and Abstract Expressionist movements. Johns studied at the University of South Carolina and briefly at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. In New York, Johns met fellow artists Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, with whom he explored the contemporary art scene. Johns’ works often include images and objects from popular culture and classic everyday symbols, such as flags, maps, targets, letters and numbers. His style is lush and painterly, and he would often incorporate nontraditional media in his works, such as encaustic and wax-based paint and plaster relief. His works play with presented opposites, contradictions, paradoxes, and irony. Johns also produces intaglio prints, sculptures and lithographs with similar subject themes. In 2007, the National Gallery in Washington D.C. held a retrospective of his work entitled “Jasper Johns: An Allegory of Painting 1955-65.” Other major museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York have held solo exhibitions of his work in recent years.
