Lot description
For offer here is the very first linocut ever created by Jasper Johns.

It has hand signed and numbered 3 from the extremely low edition of only 26. Apparently inspired by this exquisite piece, the artist later created a series of additional works in this media that were exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

This is an extremely rare First Edition artist's book of poetry, featuring a tipped-in original limited edition pencil signed and numbered linocut by Jasper Johns in black, gray and beige. It is sewn in the original wrappers with an elegant title label on the front cover, but can be easily removed.

The Jasper Johns linocut itself measures 9.75 inches by 6.25 inches, and when closed, the book measures 9.75 inches by 6.75 inches. The print has desirable deckled edges, so it would look exquisite floated and framed. It was printed by Leslie Miller of the Grenfell Press, New York for Z Press on luxurious Japanese Gampi paper.

The book was designed by C. Wolfgang Swets, and was set in Bembo type, after Italian scholar, poet, and cardinal Pietro Bembo (1470-1547).

This rare collaboration of American Pop Art legend Jasper Johns with the relatively young American poet Jeff Clark (b. 1971) was published in 2000 by Z Press in Calais, Vermont.

Provenance is superb as it was acquired directly from the book designer C. Wolfgang Swets; hence the extremely low edition number of this print. (3/26).

SUN ON 6 was published in a limited edition of 226, but only 26 of those feature the original pencil signed and numbered Jasper Johns print. It is also hand signed by the poet, Jeff Clark on the colophon page.

As there are 26 letters in the alphabet, this is one of the 26 lettered copies. It has the unique letter C in hand lettering (from A-Z) on the colophon page.

Makes an unforgettable gift. A rare treat and a must have for true collectors of Jasper Johns prints.

Jasper Johns, born in 1930, is one of the last of the living Pop Art legends. His work is often described as Neo-Dadaist, though he is often considered within the Pop Art and Abstract Expressionist movements. Johns studied at the University of South Carolina and briefly at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. In New York, Johns met long time friends Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, with whom he explored the contemporary art scene. Johns’ subject matter often includes images and objects from popular culture including the classical iconography of everyday symbols, such as: flags, maps, targets, letters and numbers. His style is lush and painterly, and he is famous for incorporating such media into his surfaces as encaustic and wax-based paint and plaster relief. His work plays with presented opposites, contradictions, paradoxes, and ironies much like Marcel Duchamp. Johns also produces intaglio prints, sculptures and lithographs with similar subject themes. In 2007, the National Gallery in Washington D.C. held a retrospective of his work entitled “Jasper Johns: An Allegory of Painting 1955-65.” Other major museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York have held solo exhibitions of his work in recent years. Prices of Jasper Johns' paintings continue to shatter auction records.
