Lot description
Czech photographer Jan Lukas (1915 - 2006) documented life in Europe and the United States during World War II, and depicted the years of social and political unrest that followed the war. Today, Lukas’ photographs of the war, of the liberation in May of 1945, and of the swift Communist takeover in February of 1948 are important historical documents, evidence of the rise of totalitarianism over democracy and personal freedom. As a result of his line of work and the Communist regime, Lukas was forced to flee to the U.S. in 1965 and was banned from publishing his work in Czechoslovakia for next twenty-five years. He continued to photograph in New York City, seeking out subjects from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
