The idea of the horizon has been a specialized theme and recurring motif of Jan Dibbets which arose from 1960-1974. Mounted in ten Plexiglas panels, these color photographs titled ‘Horizon Sea 1 – 10, 6⁰ - 60⁰’ was executed in 1973 and explores ideas of limitation and endlessness, dualities of nature, and perceptions self-imposed understanding. Each image could stand alone, but plays with visual interpretations as a whole, using the different angles of the sea’s horizon to create the overall impression of a crashing wave. Dibbets excels in transforming what’s perceived, as shown here by taking a stagnant still photograph to create a writhing tidal display, in order to capture the true power and aesthetics of the ocean.

Currently living and working in Amsterdam, conceptual artist Jan Dibbets (b. 1941) is known for his use of large scale, color photographs incorporated with geometrical designs to create dialogue between nature and the camera. His work maintains a distinctly personal edge, bringing perception and experience together through reinterpreted images which speak to a continuous investigation of his art. Dibbets trained as an art teacher at the Tilburg Academy, before moving on to study painting in Eindhoven from 1960-1963 and eventually St. Martin’s College in London in 1967. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues including Kunstmuseum (Winterthur, Switzerland), Musée d´Art Moderne (Paris, France), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY), among others.
