This oil painting is a masterpiece by famous Pakistani Post-Modern and Contemporary artist Jamil Naqsh (b. 1938), and belongs to a small and highly-sought after series of oil paintings that he made of reclining nude women. This work is quietly seductive, painted in a near monochromatic pallete of soft pinks and taupes. A beautiful, voluptuous yet innocent looking woman lies nude in a niche in the scene, giving a surreal touch to the composition. She gazes outward with a look of serenity, as she rests her head and dark hair upon one arm. The incredible attention to the detail of her face and figure are in marked contrast to the muted and simple treatment of the rest of the painting. Her placement in the vertical niche at the center of the canvas, which is softly lit, underscores the beauty and harmony that this figure encapsulates. Of the known reclining nudes by Naqsh, this should be considered one of his most successful in manner, theme, and composition. The feel of an Eastern miniature painting is felt in the details and theme of this work.

As one of the most prolific and famous artists from Pakistan, Jamil Naqsh (B. 1938) is revered in his country and is internationally renowned for his body of mostly figural works which combine western influences with non-western themes. In fact, Naqsh studied traditional Mughal miniature painting, and his style would evolve into a unique blend of Western cubism, neo-classical figures, and pre-Islamic Indian art, a blend which this painting embodies. The colors and compositions of Naqsh's works, however, always remain true to the East. The artist is most famous for his paintings that focus on images of woman and birds (pigeons and doves). Embracing tactile effects and exhibiting masterful control throughout his compositions, Naqsh is internationally sought after for his stunning works in vibrant colors and lyrical lines. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues world wide including Mohatta Palace Museum (Karachi, Pakistan) and the Pakistan National Council for the Arts (traveling to Paris, France, London, England, and New York, NY).
