Lot description
Born in Los Angeles, CA in 1951, painter James Brown spends his time between New York, Paris, France and Oaxaca, Mexico. Drawing inspiration from neo-expressionism, primitive art, and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Brown creates abstract semi-figurative paintings. Brown earned his B.F.A. from the Immaculate Heart College, Hollywood. CA before attending the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris, France. Brown has appeared in exhibitions throughout the world since the 1980s, including Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York; Leo Castelli, New York; Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, Switzerland; Pace Prints, New York; in 2008, James Brown 10 acos en Oaxaca', Ex-Escuela Quintana Roo, Museum, Merida, Mexico; and most recently, in 2009, 'James Brown / Stephen Mueller', Otto Zoo, Milan, Italy. Brown's work can also be seen in many public collections, including, the MoMA, New York City, NY; the Broad Contemporary Art Museum, Santa Monica, CA; the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, Germany; Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona - MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; and Galleria d´Arte Moderna di Bologna, Bologna, Italy.
