Lot description
"Johnnie Ray" references the 1950s musician who was known for his jazz and blues influenced music which would be a precursor to rock and roll. The sporadic neon letters spell out the musician's name in various scripts and colors. Working with defunct neon letters to create words and names is a favored theme of Pierson's and often reoccurs in his art. This work was dedicated by Pierson for Jack Smith as part of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS. Smith was an American performance artist and filmmaker who died of AIDS in 1989.

Jack Pierson (B. 1960, Plymouth, Massachusetts) is a contemporary American artist who works in a range of mediums including photography, drawing, collage, sculpture, and language. Pierson’s images offer fragmentary glimpses of lives lived, with all its longings and disillusionment. He creates works with a voyeuristic sensibility and a generally ‘American paradise’ subject. Pierson attended Massachusetts College of Art (Boston, MA) where he received his BFA in 1984. He currently lives and works in New York as well as southern California.

This photograph has no condition issues. There are a few minor dents in the frame.
