Lot description
Three, virginal young women, each wearing flowing white dresses lay in repose along water's edge, relaxing in a woodland grotto while one woman plays the double flute. Painted in a sublime and lush palette grounded in blues, 'Serenade' (2002) is a stunning example of the figurative oil paintings by famous Chinese Contemporary artist Zhong-Yang Huang. As "Serenade" beautifully illustrates, Yang’s oeuvre is clearly influenced by many periods of art history: the Pre-Raphaelite School, the French Impressionists, as well as the work of the great Dutch painter Rembrandt. Yang also has a great love for music and enjoys listening to music for inspiration, thus the there and title here are of particular importance. This work is large in dimensions for the artist measuring 47.25 x 42.52 inches, and is in perfect condition. The work is custom framed and comes to artnet Auctions from a private collection, Canada. The sale marks the first time this museum-level painting by the artist has ever been offered on the secondary market.

During the Cultural Revolution in China, the government put a halt to any individual creativity, and many writers, artists and academics were forced to work as laborers. At 15 years old, Zhong-Yang Huang, along with his two brothers and sister, was forced to leave school and work in the fields. For ten years, Yang toiled in the fields for hours every day. Even though he was surrounded by great hardship and poverty, Yang continued to paint.

Zhong-Yang Huang attended The Guangdong Province Art and Craft Academy, China where he completed his undergraduate degree at the end of the Cultural Revolution. he received a Masters Degree in 1981 from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and until 1984, Yang worked at the Academy as an Instructor. In 1984, Yang traveled to Canada as a visiting student, where he completed his second Masters Degree from the University of Regina, in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1987. The artist presently lives and works in Canada. In 2002, (the year this work was painted) the artist won the "Commemorative Medal for the Queen of England and Canada, Golden Jubilee", awarded by The Protocol Office of the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada. The artist's work is held in notable Museum collections world-wide, including: Guandong Fine Art Museum, China; Hong Kong Cultural Centre; The Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Canada; The Provincial Museum of Alberta as well as in Private Collections in Canada, USA, Taiwan, China, UK.
