Two Chinese scholars sit serenely across from one another, amongst jewel-toned shades of greens and jade, in this fertile depiction of China's crested mountain peaks and rolling hills representing "Summer" , painted over the closed-eyed face of a Chinese man, by contemporary Chinese artist, Huang Yan. Part of Huang's on-going “Body Landscape" series, 'Four Seasons-Summer' is one of the most important and visually stunning works in the artist's oeuvre, which mostly consists of prints and photographs. Offered here along with 'Spring', 'Autumn', and 'Winter', the 'Four 4 Seasons' quartet comprise a unique and rare opportunity to acquire these monumental oil paintings.

The landscape painted over the man's face references landscape painting from the Tang Dynasty, epitomized by the works of the 10th century. This is important, as The Tang Dynasty was seen by later dynasties, as well as by many of today's Chinese, as the apex of China's artistic, political, and intellectual culture-- the 'golden age' of China's long history. Huang here embraces Tang Dynasty Chinese traditional landscape painting as a powerful visual anchor for China's shared culture, one that is metaphorically painted on the skin of every Chinese individual, as seen here.

Huang Yan (b. 1966) is one of China's pre eminent contemporary artists. He is most internationally famous for using the human figure, including his own face, as a canvas for painting traditional scenes of Chinese landscapes and iconography. By combining traditional Chinese art with globalized discourses involving contemporary body art, Yan challenges the assumption that the human figure always takes the role of subject in an artwork, and encourages the viewer to ask whether the human figure is a passive backdrop for the real artwork- the painted landscape- or whether the figure is the subject of the artwork itself. Huang Yan currently lives and works in Beijing. His work is in top galleries, museums and collections world-wide.
