Lot description
Engaging in traditional techniques and employing an abstract geometric language, Tishan Hsu highlights the tensions between nature and technology in this work on paper, ‘Pear’. Transforming seemingly organic forms into a three-dimensional mechanism, Hsu proves technology's ability to mimic and appropriate the functions of nature.

Known for combining elements of the organic and the mechanical into a synthesis of biomorphic forms, artist Tishan Hsu gained notoriety during the 1980s with his work which focused on the uneasy tension and dialogue created by our technologically advancing society. Employing brilliant glowing colors, undulating lines, and a sculptural quality to his two-dimensional surfaces, Hsu creates stunning works which speak to transformative forms and the invasion of the mechanical upon the natural world. In addition to being a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts grant, the artist has exhibited at numerous venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, FR), and Leo Castillo Gallery (New York, NY), among others.
