Horst P. Horst (1906-1999), most often known as just Horst, was a German-American photographer best known for his photographs of women and fashion taken while working for Vogue magazine. While in Paris, he befriended many people in the art community and attended many galleries. In 1930 he met Vogue photographer Baron George Hoyningen-Huene, whom he photographed and they became longtime friends. His combination of extravagant visual fantasy and vibrant sensuality set his fashion photographs quite apart from those of Vogue's two other principal photographers of the 1930s, Steichen and Cecil Beaton. Models were photographed with meticulous precision under artificial lights; studio sets were austere; backgrounds were plain or severely geometric. His work frequently reflects his interest in surrealism and his regard of the ancient Greek ideal of physical beauty.
