Lot description
Hisashi Tenmyouya is a Japanese artist born in Tokyo in 1966. In the artist’s early career, he gained notoriety for his memorable design work in the Japanese music industry and the popular underground Tokyo magazine scene. Although Tenmyouya quickly grew to be recognized in the world of fine art, he is still happy to be referred to as a rebel in his continued use of “street art” imagery and themes. However, it is the masterful merging of the perfectly executed traditional techniques with these modern, street themes that has secured Tenmyouya a place among the few other great artists, such as Masami Teraoka , able to successfully achieve this. The artists refer to his style as “Neo-Nihonga”, referencing the term reserved for traditional Japanese style painting.

With Tenymouya’s cultural references, expertly executed illustration and use of gold leaf, a number of his works have since become iconic in Japan and throughout Asia. His paintings are increasingly sought after by collectors in both Asia and abroad.

His work has shown at the Whitney and the Japan Society in New York. Tenmyouya was awarded the Dunhill commission to create the official art image for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany and is a regular featuring artist at notable fairs such ART HK, The Armory New York, Arco Madrid as well as other showings in Dubai, Paris, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Kiev and Sao Paulo.
He currently lives and works in Saitama, Japan and is represented by Mizuma Art Gallery in Tokyo.

In its frame, the size of this painting is approx. 35.5 x 27.5cm; the work itself is approx. 23.5 x 16.5 in.
