Lot description
Henry Koerner (1915–1991) was an American artist whose always inventive drawings and paintings are hard to classify, yet easily accessible for viewers of all types. Shifting in styles throughout his life, Koerner gained fame as a graphic designer during the second World War, and later was commissioned by the US Army to sketch the Nuremberg Trials. Shortly after the end of the war, Koerner held the first gallery show in post-war Germany displaying a style that would later become know as Magic Realism. He worked for Time magazine in the 1950s and 60s, producing over 50 painted covers. His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, among others.
