Lot description
Image is 9.5 x 14.12 inches (24.1 x 35.9 cm); paper size is 12 x 16 inches (30.3 x 40.5 cm). Printed in 1970.

Cartier-Bresson's first solo show took place in 1932 at the Galerie Pierre Colle, Paris. Cartier-Bresson's use of a small camera gave him the essential ability to overcome the formal and unnatural behavior of those who were aware of being photographed. This work exemplifies Cartier-Bresson's ability to capture personal moments candidly: his subject, Pierre Colle, reclines after just putting down the newspaper and casually glances up.

Condition and Restoration: The photograph was damaged when the glass in which it was framed broke from a fall. It has been completely restored. There were areas of damaged emulsion right above the signature. Consolidation and lay down of all areas of emulsion over loss areas using water-based adhesive. Dry under blotters and light weights were used to flatten. Inpainting of the emulsion was completed with watercolors.
