Lot description
"Friendship (diptych)" (1999) are two iconic and dynamic color c-print photographs by internationally recognized Chinese Contemporary photographer, Hai Bo (China, b. 1962). Both images are in excellent condition, are edition 13/18, and are custom framed as a diptych to larger dimensions measuring 24 x 55 inches total. This work comes to artnet Auctions for a top U.S Private Collection. Time and memory weave through Hai Bo’s work, as they have for the last 20 years. For his series 'They', he obtained souvenir-photos from family friends and acquaintances taken during the era of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). With a distance of 30 years, Hai Bo found and gathered the same individuals to recreate the original souvenir-photos. He posed them in the exact positions. Then he paired the pictures of past and present in diptych form.

Hai Bo (b. 1962, Changchun, China) graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Fine Art Institute of Jilin in 1984 and is widely regarded as one of the finest and most important of the so-called "Cynical Realist" artists from the Chinese Avant Garde generation born in the 1960's. He is represented by the prestigious PACE Gallery as well as Beijing Commune Gallery and his photographs were a seminal part of the important 2011 J.Paul Getty Museum Show "Photography of New China" amongst many others. His works are held by the top Museum and Private collections world wide.
