Lot description
Executed in 2007, ‘Big Sands’ is an acrylic and collage painting by Greg Miller which captures one of the most iconic buildings in Las Vegas, the Sands Hotel, which operated from 1952-1996. Known for being the headquarters for the original Rat Pack in the Copa Room and breaking the color barrier, the Sands was instrumental in promoting the Strip of Las Vegas. Drawing upon American nostalgia for its iconic 1950’s past, Miller captures the Sands in this classic portrayal with a retro flair, adding collaged elements unique to his distinctive style.

Known for his dynamically executed paintings which combine abstraction with figurative elements, the work of artist Greg Miller (b. 1951) explore relationships between urban environments and personal experiences. Drawing inspiration from history and American culture, Miller investigates themes of ambiguity, impermanence, nostalgia, and contradiction with his visually engrossing compositions, often executed through collage, paint, and constructions of natural materials. Miller attended San Francisco Art Institute, UCLA Graduate School, and received his MFA from San Jose State University. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues including Caldwell Snyder Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Campton Gallery (New York, NY), Kidder-Smith Gallery (Boston, MA), Scream Gallery (London, UK), among others.
