Lot description
Gertrude Kasebier, Happy Days, 1905. Photogravure (Camera Work no. 10),
6.5 x 8 in. (16.5 x 20.3 cm).

Well known for her images of motherhood and of Native Americans, Gertrude Kasebier was a pioneer of portrait photography. She studied drawing and painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, but later decided photography was her medium of choice. After the success of exhibitions at the Boston Camera Club and the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, Alfred Stieglitz published five of Kasebier’s photographs in Camera Notes and later devoted most of the first issue of Camera Work to her images. Kasebier later went on to assist Clarence H. White in founding the Pictorial Photographers of America and was one of the first woman photographers elected to the Linked Ring, a British association of photographers promoting pictorialism and photography as a fine art. She remained at the forefront of the art and photography scene until she closed her portrait studio in 1929. A major retrospective of her work was also held that year at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. Gertrude Kasebier has earned her place in the history of photography and was a key figure in the advancement of women in photography.
