Lot description
War, death, and the rigidity of his upbringing are all elements that have subconsciously informed Gerhard Richter’s work as can be seen in 'Wolken.' This print was based on a montage of Richter's photos taken from an airplane window during a 1968 trip to Milan.

German artist Gerhard Richter (b.1932) began making prints in 1965 and has completed more than one hundred to date. Pursuing a variety of photographic printmaking processes such as screenprint, photolithography, and collotype he rectifies the photograph medium which is central to Richter’s work. Focusing on pictorial documentation and rejecting the Expressionist painting popular at the time, Richter looked for mediums that would lend a ‘non-art’ appearance to his work.
