On April 7, 2005, Richter partially covered a photograph of a landscape with grey paint. With the stroke of a brush he altered the image, creating a new landscape with a different atmosphere and reality - this piece is a photograph taken thereof. The world created through photography plays a major role in Richter’s oeuvre and he often uses photographs as templates for new works.
Gerard Richter was born in Dresden, Germany in 1932. His art career began when he enrolled in the Dresden Academy of Arts in 1951. By the early sixties, Richter met and befriended such influential German artists as Sigmar Polke, Konrad Fischer-Lueg and Georg Baselitz. Richter’s paintings are characterized by a complex layering of techniques to achieve different forms of representation. He is best known for his abstractions and blurred imagery. Richter works from photographs, painting images of people and landscapes. Instead of attempting to create an exact replica of the photograph, Richter tries to disrupt the illusion with smudges and blurs rendering the illusion of a place or person unbelievable and tricky for the sight to grasp. In 2008, the first major retrospective of Richter’s work since 1991 was held in Britain. This year another major retrospective entitled Panorama toured Berlin and now Paris.
