Lot description
In the late 1960s, Gerald Laing expended his Pop Art style to include abstracted, three-dimensional representations of the pop culture imagery that inspired his career. As is demonstrated in ‘Orange Free Fall’, Laing followed in the footsteps of fellow Pop Artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and reduced his renderings to geographic shapes and patterns that still maintained the essence of his subjects he portrayed.

As one of the most significant painters and sculptors of the British Pop Art movement, Gerald Laing’s (1936-2011) large-scale canvases based on newspaper photographs of celebrities are often included in Pop Art retrospectives. Referencing everything from politics to Hollywood, Laing intended for his art to act as reminders of events and people that shaped popular culture. Liang was an officer in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers before attending St Martin's School of Art in London, England. After graduating in 1964, Laing moved to New York to live and work under Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. Recently, his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Belgrave Gallery St. Ives, St. Ives, Cornwell, England (2011); Stolenspace Gallery, London, England (2010); Galerie Klaus Benden, Cologne, Germany (2009); Berardo Museum, Lisbon, Portugal (2008); Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome, Italy (2007); and Musée d´art moderne et contemporain, Geneva, Switzerland (2005).
