Lot description
[26.7 x 35.9 x 11.4 cm.]
Rarely at auction, this intimate portrait is an iconic image created during Segal's most productive period in the 1970s.

American sculptor George Segal (1924-2000), is best known for life-size colorless sculptures created with his unique process (he employed plaster bandages normally used for orthopedic casts). A student of both Tony Smith and William Baziotes, Segal used a 20th century Pop sensibility to reinvent the classic nude. The artist created common figures frozen in place—often in juxtaposition to a mundane environment and reflecting daily life —in contrast to the 19th century sculpture tradition of ‘monumental’ or heroic figures.

10 x 14 x 4 inches, Plexiglas box frame, with hinged and wired for hanging. [Measurements of the Plexiglas frame: 17 x 20 x 7 inches]
