Lot description
George Watson, Prohibition: Confiscated Beer Foams Down 3rd and Hill Streets, 1930s. Gelatin silver print on original mount, 15.5 x 19 inches (39.4 x 48.3 cm). Printed in 1972 for the Watson Family Exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry. Signed and labeled.

The Watson Family of photographers spans four generations, and began with James Watson, who moved to the U.S. from England in 1885. He moved to Los Angeles in 1901, and the family’s work would remain focused in Southern California into the 21st century.

George Watson (1892-1977) was one of James Watson's three sons to continue the Watson family's legacy in photography. George Watson was hired in 1917 by the Los Angeles Times as one of their first staff photographers. He went on to provide images to accompany many of the major news stories of the roaring 20s. In 1929, he left the Times to become photographer and manager of ACME News Pictures, where he covered the 1932 Olympics and documented many emerging developments in flight technology. George Watson worked at ACME until he retired in 1940.
