When asked about his series American Tan, Hume stated that the pieces were "responses to America and how we're all being tanned by American policy and culture, the war and simple, complicated stuff like that. It started off with cheerleaders. The form of them is absolutely fantastic. They're athletic. They're super-gymnasts . . ." This work shows one of these super-gymnasts in mid cartwheel.

Born in 1962 in Kent, England, the artist worked as an assistant film editor before quitting in the 1980’s to focus on art. In 1988 he graduated from Goldsmith’s College in London, where he currently lives and works. His earliest well-known works were his “door paintings”, which were life-size replicas of hospital doors. In the 1990’s he concentrated on paintings in gloss paint on aluminum. He has been exhibiting since 2000 in Sweden, England, Ireland, Germany, and the U.S. among other countries. In 2001, he was made a Royal Academician.
