Garry Winogrand (14 January 1928, New York City – 19 March 1984, Tijuana, Mexico) has been described as "an undisciplined mixture of energy, ego, curiosity, ignorance, and street-smart naiveté." The Bronx native photographed incessantly, mostly on the streets, working as a freelance photographer for a picture agency and eventually publishing journalistic images in numerous magazines throughout the fifties. Winogrand was known for his portrayal of American life in the early 1960s and many of his photographs depict the social issues of his time day and in the role of media in shaping attitudes.

Winogrand was the recipient of many grants including several Guggenheim fellowships. His work has been collected by numerous museums and private collectors and has been the subject of many museum and gallery exhibits.
