Signed, lower right front in white oil paint
Lot description
"I like the environs of darkness and to express myself in black and grey colors. The grey scale between black and white is useful in reflecting memories of the past as I strive to discover sunshine amidst darkness."
-Gao Zengli.

"Little Monk" (2009) is a monumental oil painting on gunny canvas that belongs to the famous "Little Monk" Series of figurative oil paintings by Chinese Contemporary artist Gao Zengli. The artist was formally trained in China and also in Paris, France, and spends time between both countries. This dialectic has admittedly affected his painting style and chosen subjects, as living away from China has made him more nostalgic for his country and his childhood there. In turn, his paintings are based on his desire to encapsulate memories or stories told to him as a child. "Little Monk" (2009) is painted literally as fragments reconstructed, a style that has made Gao famous, with the figure of the young boy partially painted over by rectilinear black, grey and white blocks and circles. This is the largest and finest of his "Little Monk" paintings that all tend to feature a young monk swathed in red, deep in thought, meditation or as seen here, reading. Gao's Series includes portraits of other famous personalities from China's past, such as the last Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Pu-yi, and Chairman Mao. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

The artist was Born in Lanzhou, Gansu Province China in 1964. The artist finished his art training in the Shandong Academy of Fine Art and later at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, France. His work has been the subject of solo and group Museum and Gallery exhibitions for over the last decade including in Europe and Asia including in 2010: "The Wall-Gao Zengli Solo Exhibition", Sunshine Art Museum, Beijing, China and his 2006: "Orange Park Exhibition Hall of Luxembourg Museum-Invitational Solo Exhibition", Paris, France and GORI Foundation for Contemporary Art, Florence, Italy in the same year. The artist has had major shows in Russia, Italy, Australia, Singapore and many other countries world-wide.
