Lot description
This piece is a set of eight digital photographs each with measurements of 19.7 x 31.5 inches unframed.

“Ice Buddha Sculpture No. 1 (eight)” is combination of eight photographs of a performance piece by Tibetan artist Gade,(b.1971) who is considered one of the top emerging artists of his region and time. In this work an ice sculpture of Buddha floats along the Lhasa River where the artist was born. Vastly different from his peers His works refer to a traditional Tibetan religious practices of meditation and contemplation, and the erosion or melting of Tibetan identity into today's contemporary universal culture.

Gade, who was born in Lhasa during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), alludes to a confused cultural Tibetan identity. He states “We don’t know where our spiritual homeland is –New York Beijing, or Lhasa.” He is considered a representative of the new artistic movement of Western and Chinese influences within Tibet, co-founding the pioneering arts collective, Gedun Choephel Artist’ Guild. Gade attended Tibet University and graduated Beijing’s Central Fine Art Academy in , and participated in several shows through the US, Europe, and Asia, including “55 days in Valencia, Chinese Art Meeting” in Valencia Spain, “Lhasa-New Art from Tibet” in Beijing, and “From Classic to Contemporary: Visions from Tibet” in London, UK. He currently lectures at the Fine Arts School of Tibet University.
