Lot description
Franz West
'Privat Lampe Des Kunstlers I'
75.6 x 92.5 x 7.9 inches
Welded iron chain with patina floor lamp
Designed 1989

'Privat Lampe Des Kunstlers I' exemplifies Franz West's "art for art's sake" approach to creating art. Here, the functional object of the lamp is transformed into an art object simply through the artist's definition of it as art. West challenges the audience to rethink their traditional approach to and understanding of art by encouraging them to read the worldly object as an art object.

Austrian Franz West (B. 1947, Vienna, Austria) creates work that blurs the border between sculpture and installation; his use of found objects redefines the experience and interpretation of three-dimensional art as well as furniture design. Called ‘funky bohemian’, West’s crafted objects are art for art’s sake; his monumental public sculptures are installed throughout the world. The artist has held numerous exhibitions the world over with recent shows at Galerie Eva Presenhuber (Zurich, Switzerland), Hayward Gallery (London, UK), and The Garage Center for Contemporary Culture (Moscow, Russia), among others.
