Lot description
An avid boxer, Fletcher Martin painted what he knew. In the early parts of his self-taught career he was a sporting artist, following the fights and keenly recording the pivotal instances that define the emotion and fury of boxing. He worked with the WPA during the war, painting murals in LA along side other great artists and intellectuals like David Siqueiros, William Saroyan, Nathaniel West, and Budd Schulberg. Later in life he expanded his repertoire and taught at a number of universities in the U.S. Martin's work is included in many important institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Pennsylvania Academy, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and has been included in the Venice Biennale.
