Lot description
Fang Lijun (China, b. 1963). "No. 11" 1996, Wood-block print, 47.25 x 31.5 in (120 x 80 cm). This is 12 from an edition of 25.
This print is framed and in excellent condition.

Fang Lijun is one of the most internationally recognized members of the famous “Post ‘89” Movement” and a representative of the “Cynical Realist” style in Chinese contemporary art. This was a movement that developed after the closing of the "China Avant Garde" exhibition at the China National Gallery in Beijing and the devastating suppression of the Tienanmen Square demonstrations soon after.
Although the artist has found great success working in a variety of media, Fang Lijun is most known for his large bold woodcuts often featuring bald, stark heads often seen as self-portraits. "No. 11 (无题 Swimming)" is a perfect early representation of the force and emotion of his disillusioned generation during this period. "No. 11" belongs to the artist's famed series of wood-block prints from 1995-96 that all feature this re-occurring bald-headed protagonist. Here we see the figure focusing to a distance out of view and treading water, seemingly lost in a monotonous, choppy sea.
Fang's wood-block prints are acclaimed by curators and collectors alike and have been extensively published and exhibited in major museums in Asia, South-East Asia, Europe, South America, The U.K, The U.S. with a recent 2012 solo exhibition this March-April at the CP Foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2009 his work was featured in The Chinese Pavilion at the 53rd International Art Museum Venice Biennale – "See the World in Grain of Sand," Giardini Arsenale, Venice, Italy. From 1980-1983 he studied at Hebei Light Industry College, in Ceramic Art Studies, China and from in 1989 he graduated from the Print Department at the Central Institute of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.
