Printed later by Berenice Abbott.

Eugène Atget (b. 1857) was a sailor, actor, and painter before turning to photography, his true life’s work, at age forty. He began photographing Paris in 1898, considering his work to “document” the architecture and life of the city. His techniques were nearly obsolete when he began using them: he carried an outdated, cumbersome large-format view camera through the city streets, usually photographing around dawn. He created an unparalleled visual catalogue of French culture, capturing the storefronts, gardens, and public spaces of turn-of-the-century Paris, shortly before urbanization changed much of the landscape of the city. Though Atget was not well-known during his lifetime, his oeuvre has since become a timeless bench mark by which all modern photographers measure against. American expatriate photographers Man Ray and Berenice Abbott were largely responsible for Atget’s popularity, preserving his prints and negatives and being the first to publish and exhibit his work outside of France. Abbott made many prints from Atget’s negatives in the 1930’s.
