Lot description
Designed in 1981, this work is the Iconic 'Carlton' room divider and bookcase in plastic laminate by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass for Memphis, Italy. With an incredibly strong sense of symmetry and post-modernist use of color, this piece captures the playful approach to design that Sottsass was renowned for. An example of the 'Carlton' is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

This work is in excellent condition, has never been used, and is in its original crate.

Ettore Sottsass (B. 1917, Austria – D. 2007, Milan, Italy) was a contemporary artist who advocated design for the masses through his post-modern and anti-design works. As a founder of the Milan-based design collective Memphis, Sottsass joined with fellow artists Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Michele de Lucchi, and Paola Navone to create playful objects which abandoned traditional design in favor of bold colors and playful, futuristic forms. Though trained originally as an architect, Sottsass gained recognition in the 1950’s and 60’s as an artist with a whimsical and fresh approach to design. He had a diversified body of work including furniture, ceramics, silver, jewelry, glass, lighting, and even architecture.
